Dietary changes are fundamental in controlling acid reflux. Avoiding trigger foods—spicy and fatty foods, chocolate, caffeine, and acidic fruits—can significantly alleviate symptoms. In contrast, incorporating reflux-reducing foods like oatmeal, bananas, lean proteins, and non-citrus vegetables improves outcomes. Research published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology supports the role of eliminating dietary triggers in reducing symptoms.

Weight management is another key factor. Excess weight places pressure on the stomach, worsening reflux. Studies show that even moderate weight loss, around 10% of body weight, can substantially decrease symptoms. Regular physical activities, such as walking or yoga, are effective in maintaining a healthy weight without straining the body.

Sleeping posture also affects GERD symptoms. According to research in Chest, elevating the upper body using a wedge pillow or raising the head of the bed by 6–8 inches can reduce reflux episodes by up to 65%. Sleeping on the left side also helps prevent stomach acid from entering the oesophagus.

Herbal remedies like ginger and slippery elm offer additional support. Ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties can soothe the stomach, while slippery elm creates a protective barrier in the oesophagus, minimizing irritation. However, consulting a healthcare provider before using such remedies is essential, especially for those taking other medications.

Stress management plays a critical role in reducing GERD symptoms—relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, or gentle yoga lower stress-induced acid production. Adequate hydration, mainly drinking water between meals, helps dilute stomach acid and flush it from the oesophagus. However, consuming large amounts of water during meals may worsen symptoms.

By adopting natural treatments, including dietary adjustments, weight management, improved sleep posture, and stress reduction, older adults can achieve significant, long-term relief from GERD symptoms while enhancing overall well-being.
