In 2018, the Esophageal Hypervigilance and Anxiety Scale (EHAS) was developed in the United States to evaluate anxiety and hypervigilance related to oesophageal disorders. To broaden its use, Dr. Akinari Sawada\u2019s team at Osaka Metropolitan University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20250225\/Researchers-develop-new-tool-to-assess-psychological-impact-of-esophageal-diseases.aspx\">collaborated<\/a> with the original developers to create a Japanese version of the EHAS.<\/p>\n<p>The study analyzed 432 patients who underwent oesophageal manometry across six Japanese institutions to assess the reliability of the translated questionnaire. Despite minor cultural adjustments, the Japanese EHAS version showed validity when compared to standardised physical and mental health surveys. Additionally, in a subgroup of 113 patients with oesophageal achalasia and related conditions, higher EHAS scores correlated with more severe symptom perception.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\"><div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">&#8220;By using the EHAS to better identify oesophageal symptoms that are influenced by psychological factors, we hope that this will lead to appropriate treatment,&#8221; stated Dr. Akinari Sawada.<\/div><\/div>The study highlights the importance of psychological assessment in managing oesophageal diseases, offering a tool for improved diagnosis and treatment strategies.
